Birmingham opened as Elmdon Airport on 8 July 1939, was used by the RAF during WWII, and reopened for civil flying in 1946. The runway was extended in 1966 for jet traffic, a new terminal opened in 1984, and the Eurohub terminal followed in 1991 before the two were merged back into one in 2011. Today it is the UK's sixth-largest airport, the Midlands' primary international gateway, with direct flights to over 130 destinations.
