Built on former Royal Docks land, London City Airport opened on 26 October 1987 and was formally opened by Queen Elizabeth II that November. Designed for steep-approach aircraft to suit its tight urban site, it quickly became known as London's business-travel airport. The runway was extended in 1992, and a major terminal and taxiway expansion completed between 2017 and 2020 raised capacity toward 6.5 million passengers a year. It remains London's most central airport, dominated by British Airways CityFlyer short-haul and business routes.
