Luton opened on 16 July 1938 as Luton Municipal Airport and was used by the RAF during WWII. It became a major package-holiday hub from the 1960s (birthplace of Britannia Airways in 1962) and by 1972 was Britain's most profitable airport. A new terminal opened in 1999, and easyJet - founded here in 1995 - remains a dominant carrier. It's now the UK's fifth-busiest airport, recently upgraded with the new DART transit link to Luton Airport Parkway station.
