Newcastle Airport opened on 26 July 1935 with a single hangar and grass strip, and was handed to the RAF during WWII. A new runway and terminal opened in 1967, the airport gained Category B regional international status in 1978, and passenger numbers passed 1 million by 1980. A GBP 27 million terminal extension opened in 2000. It's now the North East's principal airport, the UK's 11th busiest, connecting the region to over 80 destinations.
